Q. What are digestive enzymes and probiotics? if i took them everyday, would they improve my health? does it matter which brand i buy?
"Probiotics are naturally occurring bacteria that help in digestion..."
Digestive enzymes are naturally occurring substances present in your stomach acid that help to break down the food that you eat. The basic ones are protease (for protein), amylase (for carbs.) and lipase (for fats). As people age, the natural enzymes become weaker and they may experience difficulty digesting the foods they had no problems with when younger. Probiotics are naturally occurring bacteria that help in digestion, the assimilation of nutrients and also form a major part of your immune system.
What they will do for your health depends on what types of health issues you presently have. You need to do some health research of your own either on the web, through books or by seeing a naturopathic or homeopathic doctor.

Q. Probiotics for weight gain? my horse needs to gain weight, but she is proving to be a hard keeper(tb). she has put on some weight since we started feeding her more, but she seems to have stopped. would feeding her probiotics everyday help her gain weight?
justacowgirl2004: yes, i knnow tbs are hard keepers. thats why i'm asking for ways to keeps more weight on her.
i know they aren't used for gaining weight. i've just heard people say that a daily dose of probiotics can help their digestion which helps them gain weight.
"Probiotics are not going to help her gain weight..."
i have a tb so i fully understand. you can get special feeds to help a horse gain weight, but i'll tell you what i feed my extremely poor doer:
cool mix, one scoop morning and night
sugar beet - one scoop morning and night
oil - one cup night
carrots - ten in each feed
1 turnip
and then either an orange, or a pear, or some celery. something different each day.
stam 30 - a great supplement avaiable from all feed stores. you could also use blue chip. they are very similar. and very effective. they do cost alot, but it's worth it, and you only feed a tiny bit.
make sure yur horse is warm enough and wormed
. feed plenty of haylage. and if there is no turn out then hand pick grass and give a couple of buckets a day. you'll laugh, but i've worked with horses for a very long time, and all the best breeders and trainers try to get their horses grass every day. and when there is no turnout hand picking is the only option.
probiotics are not going to help her gain weight. they will just produce very expensive urine

Q. Calling all herbalist - garlic: can garlic kill good probiotics in the gut because of its antiviral effects? yes i already know though research that garlic is good for cholesterol levels and antibiotics or antiviral use. its also used in aid of intestinal worms. what i am worried about is that eating garlic everyday would kill good bacteria. answers from herbalist or someone that actually knows what i am talking about only please.
"Will garlic kill the bacteria in probiotics..."
Actually no. Studies are showing that garlic does not kill natural (beneficial) human gut flora. The current theory on the subject is that garlic has been a part of human diets so far back into our evolution that our healthy gut flora has also evolved resistance to garlic, even at therapeutic doses (and even in the form of concentrated extracts.)
What's incredibly cool about this is that garlic (and in particular the component allicin) is effective against "bad" or pathogenic bacteria that have developed multiple resistance to pharmaceuticals - MRSA, Pseudomones aruginosa, etc.
Now... will garlic kill the bacteria in PROBIOTICS? If they're not natural human strains, yep it very likely will. Since many probiotics on the market are not predominantly composed of natural human strains, it's advisable to take your garlic about 1/2 hour away from your probiotic.
FYI - To optimize retention of the probiotics, it's also for the best to take your probiotics about 30 min away from meals.
You CAN take your garlic with your meals - be it pill form or food form, obviously. :) Note that if you're eating garlic cloves, the cloves should be CRUSHED first to activate the enzymes in this medicinal herb. Crushed raw garlic will burn your mouth (or skin, if you're applying it topically.) So use caution!
-------------------------------------------------------
EDIT: Had to correct some misinformation here...
Pharmaceuticals are engineered/developed to interfere (very effectively) each with a specific biologic function in their target organisms. For that reason, they're effective only against organisms in a class that performs that biologic function.
That's not generally the case with raw herbs which, because each has a range of "active ingredients", tend to have broader range effects. Some herbs, for example, have antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties (sage, eucalyptus, garlic, tea tree are all examples.) Garlic even has some anthelminthic (anti-worm) properties... in addition to many other medicinal properties. To wit: you're also right that garlic is showing significant promise reducing cholesterol levels (allicin, specifically) and even reversing plaques in arteries (arterosclerosis.) It's generating a lot of interest among the scientific community and there are lots of studies in the works.

Q. Why do i have vaginal bleeding everyday after i eat? i have looked for info and i have had no luck, i bleed more after i eat spicy food or durring sex. i have very mild pain in the stomach and i am over weight. my dr does not know what is wrong. with me i tried probiotics and it helps but as soon as i eat anything the bleeding starts again. also i get these huge blood clotts and at is all vaginal. please help if you know what is wrong or if you suffer thru the same thing i am sooooo sad i cant go swimming, have sex, or eat spicy food, what is there to live for, and am i the only one suffering from this?
this has been going on and off for 3 years now.
Sounds really nasty! Have you thought about seeing a specialist or going to hospital? That can't be normal. Perhaps it is endometriosis or something.

Q. Ibs help!?! probiotics causing pain and making me sick? has anyone had these problems? i normally have diarrhea on an everyday basis. i started taking probiotics and now i feel the need to go but cant really. my bowel movements aren't hard either. i have pain in my lower abdomen especially on the right side. lots of nausea, tired, ect. is this normal beginning probiotics?
i have not been officially diagnosed with ibs. i have been struggling to find a doctor who will help me find answers, so i decided to try probiotics. (in powder form) ciliacs has been ruled out. until my miscarriage my symptoms were not so awful. (january) has anyone had that problem?
thank you so much for the responses you have given, by the way! it is so nice to get some answers. sometimes i just feel like i am really in the dark and not even the doctors have the answers or care to find them... thank you for being so kind in your responses.
"The probiotics are supposed to be giving you..."
The probiotics are supposed to be giving you the good bacteria you can get in the yogurt with the live cultures. That pain on your right side means you're impacted with stool, and your colon is probably distended. (Stretched out.) Of course it's the weekend. If you feel the same tomorrow, I think you should go in to your insurance's "urgent care" or whatever they call their ER. At least call a 24-hour pharmacist now. They are SO smart, kind and helpful. I wish I could help you more. But you really need your gastroenterologist. Do you have any stool softeners? I believe a pharmacist would agree that you should be taking at least 200 mgs of ducosate sodium (sold over the counter) and Metamucil. Yep, call a pharmacist now.
Relax, stay calm, because nothing horrible is going to happen to you. But do get some answers and/or help soon.
Bless you, Sweetie. IBS definitely sucks. A pharmacist can answer your main question. I know Flagyl gives a lot of people nausea. Just remember, you are not alone. :)

Q. Does anyone out there know how to treat deep rooted candida(yeast) infections? i'm looking for something to kill yeast overgrowth permanently. i eat very clean, and avoid foods that are triggers. i've tried probiotics, and as long as i take them everyday i'm fine, but they don't actually kill the fungus just keep it in control.
"She also had eaten probiotics..."
Thanks for saying my answer was good Zambiti. I can never actually tell if people like the things I say on here :x
Here's the response I wrote, with some edits/additions. I mispelled Kefir in the original one.
I read alternative therapy books a lot, and from them I've learned a few things:
1) Candida is a nasty conditions that causes a lot of problems.
2) Most doctors don't awknowledge that it exists (and say it's in your head etc), or they use completely incorrect ways to treat it (ie. antibiotics).
3) It's really difficult to treat, even with alternative approaches like naturopathy which normally work when conventional therapy fails.
One of my friends came up to me and told me that she had candida, and explained how it was messing her up and that the doctors she'd seen hadn't really done s**t (or prescribed anything that work). I asked her if she'd tried fixing her diet and not eating sugar. She said she had somewhat, and it helped a little, but it didn't really make a difference. She also had eaten probiotics, which helped a bit.
I'd recently finished reading a book on oxygen therapies which said candida is exteremely difficult to cure, regardless of what you do, but hydrogen peroxide seemed to actually do the trick very quickly.
They advocated intravenous injection (which is a pain to do), but I thought drinking it might work as well since candida hangs out in the gut. I had some lying around and I'd used it for other stuff, so I figured I had nothing to lose by trying it. Neither of us thought it would work.
Generally, intravenous injections of peroxide are considered to be much more effective and better than drinking peroxide, but at the same time they are more invasive and not as easy to do (I always have a bias towards doing simpler things when I practice medicine on my own), hence we avoided it. However in your situation, it might be worth looking in that option. In the literature I read, all the people who had dramatic reversals of chronic incurable candida used intravenous peroxide.
back to my response anyhow, I checked back with autumn in a few days, and she said that she didnt think it would work, but she started noticing changes after about 3 days, and within 10 most of her symptoms had gone away (in 2 weeks she said she felt like she as 95% of where she had been before, and "wow I can't believe how much candida messed me up").
At some point, she lost the peroxide I gave her, and then went for about a week without it, at which point she noticed she got a lot worse (to about 50% of where she had been before she started, and said "I hope I don't have to use this stuff for the rest of my life."). We talked about it, and I theorized that the peroxide would probably need longer to completely kill the candida, but it might also be necessary to inject it to get some of the candida hangingou out in the bloodstream outside of the gut (in all the case studies I'd seen where peroxide worked, it was done intravenously, which we did not yet want to do).
A bit later, while still not having peroxide, she came across a drink called kefir (another strong probiotic one), and started using it. She said that it got her to the last push of 99.9%, and that she planned to use that from now on, and has been fine ever since.
Total sucesses with candida are very rare (a lot of these herbal things people suggest might work on one person, but never have consistent success since the condition is hard to treat), but I thought I'd share that example since I'm certain it happened (first hand experience), and I'd advise trying something similar.
Candida normally occurs when you have too many things in your guy that feed the fungus (ie sugar), or your stomach bacteria are supressed and can't contain the fungus. The latter commonly happens when people are overperscribed antiobiotics (which happens a lot since doctors use antiobiotics zealously). Ie, it's very common for people to get a candida infection immediately after being treated for pneumonia.
In our approach to treating it, we first killed off most of the candida with peroxide. Then once it was mostly gone, we put a lot of friendly bacteria in to put the balance in the gut back to where it should be. I don't think doing the latter will work if the Candida population is there in full force to begin with.
As far as hydrogen peroxide goes, the stuff is harmless good for you if a few safety measures are followed:
1) It has to be in a very low concentration (if you drink 30% you will most likely die and it burns skin if you touch it, whereas .05% helps your health a lot).
2) It can't have toxic additives in it (most peroxide sold does)
3) It needs to be drank away from meals (when you eat the stomach acids and proteins in gut can turn it into OH-, which is bad for you).
The procedure she followed was very simple.
1) Get a little bit of food grade 35% hydrogen peroxide* from me (you can buy it online), and an eyedropper.
*It should be stored in the freezer if not used.
2) Put 1 drop of 35% in a glass of water and drink it on the first day as far away from meals as possible.
2) 2 drops the next day
3) Keep on increasing* until it feels like you've done as much as feels comfortable (10 is the absolute max, she settled at 7).
Some people increase at a slower rate, such as 1 drop for a week, then 2 for the next instead of 1 per day.
4) once it feels peroxide has cleaned you out, switch to kefir (you cannot use both at the same time, since peroxide will kill the recently added probiotics)
I'm not an expert on probiotics, but I do know their quality greatly varies from source to source, so you need to make sure you get a good brand. All I can say is that Kaffir seems to work well. If you don't want to deal with this, you can also just keep on using peroxide, or consult a doctor that works with oxygen therapies (and say can give you intravenous injections).
Sometimes when you use peroxide, it will detoxify your system, and cause a lot of crap that was stored in your to come out quickly. This can be unpleasant for a few days (toxic flush syndrome), but once it passes you feel a lot better than you did before.
Everything I said can also be done with ozone, and ozone colonics for instance work really well (as does drinking ozonated water). However, I do not have personal experience with either and both are more expensive than peroxide (and you asked for cheaper approaches). Oxygen is really good for getting the body to purge and flush stuff out, and if you follow a peroxide regimen it will most likely get a lot out of your system.
Anyhow, I hope this helps. Candida is very difficult to cure and has a profound effect on people's lives, but hopefully if you follow this you'll be able to get better. One of the things which is not appreciated about the condition is that the disease spreads to the bloodstream from the gut (creating things like chronic fatigue), and then enters the brain and starts affecting your mood (ie. making you more depressed and emotional). Autumn said this was the biggest thing she noticed with Candida before and after being cured.
Considering how much it helped my friend, I figure it's my duty to pass the knowledge on.
Hope you liked my revised version!

Q. Antibiotics and probiotics? well, i just started taking antibiotics for strep throat and this is the first time ever in my life to take antibiotics at 21 years of age. ( i was blessed with a great immune system i suppose) i am taking amoxicillin and since it is a moderately broad spectrum antibiotic, is it a good idea to take probiotics during the course of this medication or right after wards? if so, how much. i am eating yogurt everyday but it mostly has the acidophilus bacteria and the pills i was going to by has lactobacillus among others. thanks for your help!
"You're doing a great thing consuming probiotics..."
You're doing a great thing consuming probiotics. They should help prevent diarrhea/intestinal discomfort. The way amoxicillin works is that it blocks a cross wall linkage in bacteria. So, it does NOT kill living bacteria, it just prevents bacteria from multiplying. This can also have the same effect on some of the bacteria lining your GI tract, so it helps to repopulate it with probiotic bacteria. It should help you just by eating 1-2 normal servings of yogurt a day. Hope that helps you out, feel better soon!
