Q. Does sugar cause gums to recede?

"Sugar and receding gums do not have..."

Sugar and receding gums do not have a direct relationship in that consumption of sugar does not cause the gums to receed. However when you consume sugar and fail to brush your teeth, the sugar will be converted to plaque between your teeth and gums and will eventually cause your gums to receed. Hence make sure after taking sugar and sugary foods you brush your teeth.

Q. Does anything help receding gums?

"It may be the type of toothpaste that you are using..."

Receding gums can be helped by brushing regularly in circular motions and not just up and down. Gums may recede if your brushing is too aggressive so be sure to take it easy. Make sure you floss often and stay away from chewing tobacco and mouth peircings as they will also lead to receding gums. If you still have a problem, It may be the type of toothpaste that you are using, so check with your dentist to see if he has any recommendations to help you. Sally Brown

Q. What do receding gums look like?

gingival (gum) recession can be caused by the muscle attachments being too close to the gum line at the collar of the tooth. This usually occurs more often in the lower anterior (front) teeth and less often in the areas of the premolar teeth(teeth in front of the molars). There are other causes, namely, toothbrush abrasion and clenching or grinding. If the recession is worsening there are procedures that can correct the recession. I think a visit to your dentist would be in order & help ful

Q. How can i heal a receded gum line on a single tooth?
around 4-5 months ago i started to notice the gum line of one of my top back teeth was receding. the gums around my two bottom incisors look a little odd, but they don't look anything like the top one. i was workin at a "find-some-way-to-stay awake" job, and drank tea with like 7 sugars every 2 hours. the thing is, i never really cared for sugar, so this was the first sugar overload my body's ever had. i brush twice daily, and i've never had a cavity in my life (again, dont care for sugar), but this gum just won't go back down to normal. any ideas (other than see a dentist for the time being) on how to help my poor gum out?

You are correct once your gums receed they will not come back. The only alternative is gingival gum grafts from the roof of your mouth. The sooner this is done the better chances of saving your tooth.

Q. Can sonicare hurt the gums?
i think i may have periodontal issues... i've noticed my gums receding gradually and especially between the teeth even though i floss daily, manually brush gently and use a non-alcohol mouthwash - i also rarely consume sugar i'm not sure what to do... i have a feeling my manual brush may not be getting rid of enough plaque so i bought a sonicare - but i don't want to hurt my gums with too much pressure. i planned to use the sonicare once at night on the lowest level but now i'm not so sure.. i have an appointment with my periodontist in 10 days.. help thanks in advance

The sonicare is tooth brush that most periodontists I know recommend. The sonicare has a feature built into it where if you are using too much pressure it will automatically turn off. The sonicare is also used differently than a regular tooth brush. Instead of moving the toothbrush in a scrubbing motion, leave the head stationary on each tooth and let the sonic vibrations do the cleaning. Make sure to point it at about 45 degrees to get in between your teeth and gums. The beeper goes off every 30 seconds so move the head slow enough such that it takes 30 seconds to clean one fourth of your mouth.

Q. My gum stopped bleeding after the dentist removed my plague and after quitting sugar. now it's come back even
though i no longer have giginvitis. i bleed every time i floss or brush my teeth and always end up with pink toothbrush. my gum has receded somewhat and i can feel my teeth wobbling sometimes. i read that when this happens, it means i'm in dire need of vitamin c. i've been taking 1000mg of vitamin c time released for 6 months now but no improvement at all.

for bleeding gums I take 3,000 mg of Vitamin C, 3 times a day, I take 2, 500mg niacin, 3 times a day (with meals) I take 1 CoEnzyme CQ10 100mg works pretty good.

Q. Bleeding gums and around teeth?
when i woke up this morning i went to do the norm & brush my teeth. but only this time they started bleeding like crazy! i mean every time i spit there was nothing white just red clumps like i was eating a red popsicle. anyways i looked around my teeth and noticed 2 of the side ones on top had blood around them. and then i pulled down my bottom lip and it was bright red! :( i also noticed my gums were kind of receding. my teeth feel kind of nasty as well like thin and really sensitive. what in the world is happening. this hasn't happened before... i don't eat much sugar at all. and i'm barely 20y/o, i always take such good care of my teeth. this is nasty. i also notice that when a lot of times i grind my teeth not in my sleep but when i'm awake. i'll clench them and sometimes grind a little bit. but i've always done that so has my aunt. could it be from constant throwing up. i'm recovering slowly from bulimia and anorexia. but still have always brushed my teeth, after every meal(when i would eat), every time i threw up, when i woke up, before i went to sleep. i was very ocd about it. which is why it kinda baffles me.

thats most likely to be a "side effect" of your eating disorder. your body is collapsing. it has been drained of nutrition. fruits and veggies will never make you gain weight. but will give you what you need the most right now: vit & mins and enzymes and a whole lot more that isnt even explored yet. dont settle for pills. please find a way of eating healthy. see a dentist also. when your mouth heals a bit again, make sure you floss after every brushing, it will most likely bleed in the beginning, but as you progress your gums will become stronger. sounds horrifying to me though. i hope it isnt as bad. and you might still be grinding (most likely) at night you are just not aware of it. does your jaw ever feel heavy or hurt in the morning?

Q. Painful small white bump on gums right below bottom teeth..?
the top of it is sort of whiteish and it feels sore, as if a tooth is coming in, except all my adult teeth have come in and i have already had braces. when i press down on it hard, it hurts, and it flattens out a little bit, so i don't think it's a tooth. i have very bad teeth due to genetics. i don't drink soda or juice, i dont suck on candy, i chew sugar free minty gum only. i still get cavities frequently, even though i brush my teeth twice a day and floss at night. i even have one of those expensive sonicare electric toothbrushes, still doesn't help. i have some gum disease on some of my bottom teeth (red and slightly receding). a few days ago i discovered this bump. what is it? oh and the tooth its under does not hurt at all and doesn't have a cavity or a filling.

it could just be a cold sore, everyone gets them. If it is one, it will go away in a few days, but if you're really concerned maybe see your dentist or doctor.

Q. How do you know you have gingivitis? my gums aren't bleeding but receeding a bit?
ok this is bad but i haven't been to the dentist since i was 7 and now i'm 18...i know horrible but my family just couldn't afford it but i am going this month because i told my mom we should really get our teeth cleaned. so i think i have sensitive gums because when i brush my teeth with a hard brush they kind of recede and my roots get exposed and it hurts so much when i eat sugar and cold things. now i am using a soft brush so that they won't recede anymore. i thought i had gingivitis but my gums don't bleed they are just receding a bit. i floss and brush my teeth twice a day and sometimes 3 times because i want them as clean as they can be without professional help. i am also wondering if there is anything that can be done to add gums in my mouth so that my roots aren't exposed anymore?

"Try using sensodyne twice a day instead of regular toothpaste..."

I am a dental hygienist and I see this problem frequently. Please stop using a hard toothbrush! You are causing your gums to recede because you are brushing too hard and using a hard toothbrush. This causes the roots of your teeth to be exposed to air. The roots aren't covered by enamel so they aren't protected which is why you're having sensitivity. Try using Sensodyne twice a day instead of regular toothpaste. And if that doesn't help your dentist can apply a desensitizer. See your hygienist for a cleaning and a check up, and please throw out that hard toothbrush! Use soft or extra soft only!

Q. Is it possible to make up for teeth damage from lots of sugar by controlling a diet?
i went a couple of years eating a lot of sugar... like. a lot. because my mum started giving me lunch money instead of a packed lunch, on the way to school and stuff i bought lots. now i'm paying the price. if i have an extremely minimalistic sugary diet from now on, can i make up for it? i regret every bar i ate :'( and i think my teeth look yellowish now and enamel looks thin and some gums look a bit receded, i'm only 16. any help? would getting them whitened recover from this?

By doing a good thing now by changing your diet will help prevent future problems, it will not correct any damage already incurred.

Q. How to stop gum loss/decay?
on my front teeth (top and bottom) the gum around the top seems to be receding, moreso on the bottom set. every other tooth apart from those ten (canines top & bottom and the ones in between them) are fine, nothing wrong whatsoever. i brush my teeth twice a day (4-5 mins each time), floss once a day, use mouthwash (dentyl ph, i think) twice a day and always drink fizzy drinks etc through a straw (i heard it was meant to be bad, the fizz and all the other sugars). i'm cutting down the amount of sugary foods i eat, too.

Go see your dentist, they would be the most educated person to confide in and lead you to the proper treatments.
