"The probiotic at least two weeks after antibiotics..."

There is no fixed time as to when to take probiotic after antibiotic use but it is best to keep taking the probiotic at least two weeks after antibiotics . You can take the probiotic for a month afterwards or use a probiotic fortified yogurt such as Activia for a month. The symptoms of taking antibiotics such as diarrhea should be fixed by the probiotic use at that point.

This answer closely relates to:
  • Taking a probiotic with an antibiotic
    • After taking antibiotic, is it beneficial to us a probiotic that you would give a cow? a 15 year old has pnuemonia and needs probiotic and his p?
    • Is it bad to eat probiotic yogurt while taking antibiotics?
    • Is it good to eat probiotic yogurt when taking antibiotics?

Q. If you let probiotic yogurt sit out for too long, does it then turn into antibiotic yogurt?
...or do you just get regular food poisoning like everything else that is left out for longer than two hours?

No to your main question, and YES to your second. Always read the expiration date too. (It IS on there somewhere!) :)

Q. How long should you give your child probiotic?
i'm giving my daughter a herbal pro biotic remedy, due to being on antibiotics, how long should i give it for?

"Always used them with antibiotics and gi upsets..."

At least a week after she's done. I give all my kids acidophilus/ bifidus every day, especially the little ones as their GI tracts are more sensitive. Always used them with antibiotics and GI upsets, but I started after the 16 month old had lingering problems (diaper rashes - which she'd never had before, frequent diarrhea, all the yucky toddler stuff) after her first time on antibiotics several months ago, and we've had no problems since. You can keep her on them for general health as long as you want. Especially with all the thing they can get into their mouths, it can't hurt.

i'm currently in the second week of a 2-week 8 pill per day antibiotic regimen. the antibiotics are for an h. pylori infection in my stomach. i believe that the antibiotics are working, but i want to restore my intestinal health with a good probiotic. i selected one that i think will work for me. is it okay to start it now? or should i wait a while before i begin it? thanks in advance.

i think u can wait for a week or two, and do consult this thing with yr doc.

Q. How long did it take for your acne to clear up with doxycycline?
i am wondering because my dermatologist prescribed me 100mg of doxycycline and i have heard that you must take it for months before seeing any kind of results. i am also a bit concerned since this is an antibiotic that in this time frame will likely kill more probiotic bacteria than the bacterias that cause acne, assuming it even kills them all. so i guess i just need reassurance. i am sure at least one of you out there has taken doxycycline. please tell me the severity of your acne, how long it took it to clear up (e.g, how long did you take the antibiotics), and whether or not your acne ever reappeared after you finished the course of antibiotics. thanks.

"There are better methods than antibiotics which can cause indigestion and reflux..."

2 or 3 months. He kept me on it for about a year though because once I stopped it my acne came back. There are better methods than antibiotics which can cause indigestion and reflux problems as well as the issues you mentioned. Doxycycline also causes esophogeal (spelling?) problems. I went to the doctor with stomach problems and the first thing she asked me was if I had taken the antibiotic and that it causes all kinds of problems if not taken with enough water. (and I thought I was!) I spent the next 3 months taking probiotics, changing my diet, etc. I've had moderate and severe acne for 11 years and the only thing that helped clear it up (gentler than antibiotics) is Carley's Clear and Smooth. And I've tried it all short of Accutane. I have to keep using the face wash though but my acne has gotten much better. I also cut out milk and gluten products as much as possible and notice a difference from the lack of milk in my diet. Give it a try before the antibiotics-it's cheaper and safer on your body. Q. What's a good probiotic to help with side effects of antibiotics?
and how long does it take to work etc

"Way home from the pharmacy because all antibiotics (even natural ones like colloidal silver..."

Two years ago I had a tooth extracted, it became infected, had to take antibiotic. I stopped by the health food store on my way home from the pharmacy because ALL antibiotics (even natural ones like colloidal silver ) turn me inside out. I bought Renew Life brand "FloraSmart." It is enteric coated and individually sealed in foil so requires no refrigeration. This was important to me because I was getting ready to go to China. I started both pills that day and never had a moment of gastric distress in 2 weeks I did the antibiotic therapy. If you are already have side effects from antibiotic, it will probably take at least 2-3 days to see improvement. I cannot take their probiotic for "maintenance" as they recommend but I do take the weakest one from time to time, just for good measure. See the link if you want to learn more about it.

Q. Does probiotic get rid of cystitis and any really good cures apart from antibiotics any1?
iv suffered from it most of me life since i was about 6 and i used 2 get it lyk once a year now i get it nearly every month or sometimes weekly iv been to doctors and stuff been on antibiotics but they dont make me feel any better and i need to find a long term cure which will stop it comming back all the time. any one have any good cures apaprt from all the useral ones .

"However left without antibiotic treatment a percentage of patients will..."

I really am the most anti-antibiotic doctor you could meet. However this is a no-no. Cystitis is annoying, it only affects the bladder, however left without antibiotic treatment a percentage of patients will go on to get infection spreading up the ureters to the kidneys. Here they cause pyelitis or pyelonephritis, this can cause permanent scarring to the kidneys. If this occurs repeatedly it can result in renal failure. Avoid them for coughs, colds, sore throats, middle ear infections and sinusitis, the evidence here is that they have almost no effect anyway.

Q. Compared to a probiotic capsule containing 500 million cfu of lactobacillus, how much is in a cup of yogurt?
as far as i can find out, most probiotic capsules contain several strains of bifidobacteria and lactobacillus, and some even have streptococcus. and they all measure how much of each is in each capsule. what i want to know is: how much is in yogurt? are these the same bacteria that is in yogurt? and most importantly: how do i make/get yogurt with the highest concentration of this bacteria (because my son is coming off a treatment of antibiotics). if i make my own yogurt at home, how long should i increase the incubation time (and thus he growth of bacteria) before it becomes detrimental to the life of the bacteria - which i want to be healthy, of course. a lot of websites talk about how to make yogurt, which i've done. but i haven’t found any that talk about it in terms of actual bacterial growth and how to maximize every bite of yogurt (which, in my mind, is more practical and a lot cheaper than buying probiotic capsules).

Q. Any ideas what is causing my month long stomach ache?
i am 30 years old and in good health. i have had stomach/abdominal/intestinal cramping/spasms and lots of gas for the past month. i was on some antibiotics, which my doctor thinks is causing the issues. i have been off them for two weeks though and it isn't getting better. i also take probiotic pills to help with digestion if the antibiotics killed useful bacteria. i have no serious symptoms like blood in my stool, vomitting, fever, etc. hence, my doctor isn't concerned. it feels like if you suck in your gut...then push it out...then suck it in again...for like 10 minutes straight. it affects me mostly from my belly button to 3 inches above my belly button. it doesn't hurt, it just feels uncomfortable. i am not sure what to do. a month long stomach issue isn't normal. thanks for your help!

hi, i'm guessing either ulcer,or gall bladder possibly. try eatting some yogurt and see if this will take care of your gassy problem. hope this helps

Q. I think i might have a persisting bacterial imbalance after antibiotics causing abdo discomfort?
how long would i have to take a probiotic eg acidophilus to recolonise the gut? and is it possible to take too much or for too long? non gi specialist doctors don't seem to know much about probiotics.

"After about 6 weeks of acidophiles following antibiotic therapy would be sufficient to stop..."

Acidophiles is excellent choice. Don't have to worry about taking it too long, can continue to take one or two tablets/capsules per day. Acidophiles contains only good bacteria, but I would say after about 6 weeks of acidophiles following antibiotic therapy would be sufficient to stop taking. Also yogurt with live cultures is natural, nutritional way of getting live good bacteria, along with buttermilk. Thanks for the opportunity to address your question.
