There are basically two answers to this question. A woman is technically pregnant for 38 weeks., but you will commonly hear that pregnancy is supposed to last 49 weeks. This is because Dr`s count from thed first day of your last menstrual period which assumes that you ovulate around two weeks after that. That assumption is what gets people into trouble with their due dates "going over" in my humble opinion. Not everyone ovulates on day 14 and not everyone has a 28 day period.

Due date for delivery of baby is counted from the first day of LMP (Last menstrual cycle). It is usually 9 months one week, which amounts to roughly 40 weeks for a normal full grown baby to be born. This is because a normal woman ovulates after 2 weeks of her last menstral period. Any baby born after 36 weeks pregnancy is generally considered normal, but babies born before that period i.e., less than 36 weeks need special care like keeping in incubator etc.

If you are the egg donor, and the sperm is of from your husband, the average price is somewhere around 100.000$. The costs differ taking in consideration the different combination you may be in. My advice is to check this prices at a fertilization clinic. In the 100.000$ I`ve mentioned above, all taxes are included, as you have to pay 15.000$ to the surrogate mother for carrying your child. Yes another woman can carry your baby in case you are unable to do so due to some medical reasons. It is totally your call if you want to carry your baby your self or you want some one else to do the job for you. Try to find some one to carry the baby in your friend circle or family .

Dear Denny, I am sure your sister is not going to charge you as much as is charged by other surrogate moms so be happy :) As far as cost is concerned, in most of the countries of American continent, Europe and in Australia, it costs in thousands of dollars but in some countries of Africa, asia etc it is less costly and you can get a surrogate mom in just a few hundred dollars. So pay to your sister keeping in mind this regional costs factor.

First of all there is no guarantees that IVF will work - the hope is that after your cycle, you will be expecting but . . . unfortunately success rates depend on age, quality of eggs, response to the meds, fertilization rates etc . . .Worrying about it is not going to help. I know it is impossible not to stress about it . . . but just find good doctors, trust them, cross your fingers, hope and pray. Do what you can to manage your stress. As to conceiving twins, it depends on how many embryos you transfer back. You will need to discuss this with your doctor. Many doctors recommend transferring no more than 3 and studies have shown that 1 is just as successful as transferring back more . . . without the risks associated wtih a multiple pregnancy. If you don`t want twins, only transfer 1 . . . if it is a risk you are willing to take, transfer back 2 but no more than that. My advice when it comes to this decision is do not transfer more embryos that you are willing to carry . We transferred 2 and now have twins. As to gender selection - yes, you can select the gender BUT it is an additional treatment called PGD and is very expensive. Many clinics do not even offer this service and those that do tend to do it more in situations where there is a gender-based fatal disease that is trying to be avoided or for family-balancing. They determine the gender of the embryo AFTER fertilization and before transfer not by gender typing the sperm. Gemma is also incorrect about them selecting the healthiest sperm for IVF . . . unless you are doing ICSI where they take the sperm cell and inject it into the egg to increase your fertilization rates . . . in a basic IVF cycle, they simply put the egg and prepared sperm sample together and hope for the best. There is not a lot of selection going on but with a good quantity of eggs retrieved and a healthy sperm count . . . ICSI is not necessary. This procedure is usually done if you had an unsuccessful IVF cycle due to low fertilization rates or if you have severe male factor infertility issues.
