"You should eat 1 small yogurt per day after antibiotics..."

You should eat 1 small yogurt per day after antibiotics. Be sure to get a live culture antibiotic or you will be wasting your time. In addition to yogurt you need to be taking other pro biotic foods and supplements.

Q. Yeast infection, caused by antibiotics, please help!?
recently went through 2 courses of antibiotics, separated by about 10 days, for some brutal double ear infections (after both pneumonia and the flu- it has not been my month!). 1. amoxicillin, 10 days, 3 pills per day. -- 10 or 12 day break-- 2. augmentin, 2 pills/day, 10 days. i got yeast infections with both courses, despite eating yogurt with active cultures every day. the first one cleared up after the monistat 3. halfway through the second course of antibiotics i got the worst one ever (i mean ever!!). dr prescribed 2 150 mg pills of diflucan. i took one on the 7th or 8th day and one on the 10th day. it is now 4 days after i ended antibiotics/diflucan. while it has cleared up some, it's still a bit irritated and itchy. my question is, should i do another monistat 3 dose or is that unhealthy? i miss regular sex! i forgot, i have a pain in my pelvic region that comes and goes- very fleeting- like a period cramp. this is why i'm concerned.

"I seriously doubt the pelvic pain has anything to do with the infection..."

I seriously doubt the pelvic pain has anything to do with the infection... that could be anything from ovulation to bowel. Talk to the same doctor that prescribed the last doses so they know what is going on. Oh, and that post about condoms or butt.... definitely a guy remark. Yeast infections are uncomfortable. A condom isn't going to help... sheesh. Oh, and Lamisil is only for EXTERNAL USE ONLY, not for vaginal yeast infections.

Q. Help for stomachache caused by antibiotic use?
my nearly eight year old daughter has been fighting a sinus infection for the last 3 weeks - we've done one round of antibiotics and are starting another (septra) - she eats when given the antibiotic, but still complains of stomach distress and loses her appetite during the course of the antibiotic. i give her yogurt to help rebuild the good bacteria lost due to treatment - but was wondering is anyone had any other advice that could hopefully make her a little more comfortable in the next few days.

"It coats the stomach to help ease the antibiotic in the system...."

Drinking milk with the antibiotic can help. It coats the stomach to help ease the antibiotic in the system.

"There are alternative antibiotics that you take more often..."

Hmm To tell you the truth...I wouldnt mess with too many home remedies for this. there are alternative antibiotics that you take more often, but usually avoid any nausea... I would ask your dr about that. Im all for home remedies for a lot of things, but anti bios are pretty crazy things as far as medicine goes...I think we'll find more problems with them as we keep studying them. Not to scare you, im sure its fine...just giving you my opinion on the matter!;)

Q. Antibiotics and probiotics?
well, i just started taking antibiotics for strep throat and this is the first time ever in my life to take antibiotics at 21 years of age. ( i was blessed with a great immune system i suppose) i am taking amoxicillin and since it is a moderately broad spectrum antibiotic, is it a good idea to take probiotics during the course of this medication or right after wards? if so, how much. i am eating yogurt everyday but it mostly has the acidophilus bacteria and the pills i was going to by has lactobacillus among others. thanks for your help!

"It should help you just by eating 1-2 normal servings of yogurt a day..."

You're doing a great thing consuming probiotics. They should help prevent diarrhea/intestinal discomfort. The way amoxicillin works is that it blocks a cross wall linkage in bacteria. So, it does NOT kill living bacteria, it just prevents bacteria from multiplying. This can also have the same effect on some of the bacteria lining your GI tract, so it helps to repopulate it with probiotic bacteria. It should help you just by eating 1-2 normal servings of yogurt a day. Hope that helps you out, feel better soon!

This answer closely relates to:
  • Eating yogurt after a course of antibiotics

Q. Yeast infections and antibiotics?
i am getting a sinus infection and i know that they are going to put me on antibiotics tomorrow when i go to the dr's. are there any antibiotics out there that don't cause a yeast infection? every time i have been on antibiotics i get an infection and of course i'm sure most woman would agree you would almost rather live with the sinus infection lol. but i was told by my mom that there are antibiotics that cause them and than some that don't. we live in a one horse town lol and i would rather have some kind of name to give to them and ask them about it. i have told them before that the meds give me yeast infections and they just prescribe me diflucan which works, but you still have to wait till your done with the meds anyway and on top of it all it's that time of month for me.i know eating yogurt and all that helps.i know when i was younger that i was able to take amoxicilian and not get one, but now they prescribe it with potassium in it and that gets me. any help would be great

Q. Dog on antibiotics - throwing up bile?
another question for the vet experts. our dog was put on antibiotics 1 week ago to rule out a bacterial infection. he went to the vet with swollen lymph nodes under the jaw and his back legs. samples of the nodes came back negative for cancer cells and blood work was fine-with the exception of a slightly low platelet count that the vet didn't even mention, i just saw it on the results. he's thrown up bile twice now. once monday night before his scheduled eating time and again today before feeding. it's bile with froth. tonight was a lot of bile. the antibiotic he's taking is ampicillin 500 mg. he takes 2 caps in the a.m. and 2 at night. i think his nodes have decreased a bit in swelling-but i can still feel them. he seems fine otherwise-wants to play in the snow, good appetite. he eats a high quality senior dry food and we supplement with veggies, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, yogurt, etc. not all at once of course! he's 9 yrs old, 100lb. supplements include glucosomine & fish oil. i plan on calling the vet - it's after 5 here. thanks. plan on calling the vet tomorrow, it was after 5 when the question was posted.

"His meals - so its likely his stomach is empty..."

A stomach that remains empty for too long will become irritated from the gastric juices and cause the dog to vomit bile. The vomit will appear yellowy and frothy. You mention that this tends to happen before his meals - so its likely his stomach is empty , he's anticipating eating soon, and then he gets sick. Try giving him a few smaller meals, versus 1 or 2 larger meals, during the day. Antibiotics can also cause vomitting. You can decrease this risk by giving him his meds with food. You should update your Vet about his vomitting though. He may want to try a different medication. It doesn't sound like he warrants an emergency trip to the clinic tonight though. Just touch base with the Vet in the morning and let him know. BTW - You will get lots of feedback about diet from other people. It tends to be a hotly contested item to discuss. Provided your dog doesn't have dietary restrictions due to other illness/conditions etc...what you are feeding him appears to be A-Ok. (and I'm sure your Vet will concur)

Q. Preventing yeast infections?
i am 19 years old (female of course) and have never had a yeast infection before. but i have been on antibiotics for my sinuses for two weeks straight now, and today when i went to refill my prescription for another two weeks, my doctor told me that all these antibiotics may make me more susceptible to getting a yeast infection (the antibiotics are avelox, if it makes a difference). the doctor told me to eat at least one yogurt every day to help prevent yeast infections. but i've never had one before so i'm really paranoid about getting one, they sound horrible. is there anything else i can do, other than trying to keep myself clean and eating a yogurt daily to prevent them? if i eat several yogurts, will it prevent it even better?

"The yogurt will help to prevent yeast infection in your gi tract..."

Just eat a normal amount of yogurt. If you want, you get get Activa brand, which has some extra little bacteria in it to help you, but that's not required. The yogurt will help to prevent yeast infection in your GI tract, especially your rectum. I don't believe that it will help to prevent a vaginal yeast infection. To help prevent vaginal yeast infection, do keep it clean but do not overclean. I would avoid douches, rinses, and that sort of thing right now unless they are really needed. And, just keep an eye out for yeast infections in spite of these things. You're susceptible because your normal resident bacteria are being killed off by the antibiotics, leaving an opportunity for other invaders such as yeast to take over. This is possible no matter how careful you are. If it happens, it is not a big deal. Just call the doctor for a treatment for it.

Q. Vaginal infection for 2 months? pls help?
it started when i went on antibiotics for strep throat in late sept. i got a yeast infection as i always do. i took diflucan and it cleared up but i still had some discomfort (pain on contact, like my pants were uncomfortable, etc). went to the gyn who said it could be yeast or could be bv. he gave me clindesse (vaginally). i tried it and felt better within about a week. i took tons of baths to keep the area clean and ate lots of yogurt. then a few days ago i felt the discomfort again. the discharge is minimal- not like yeast really...i had my primary call me in diflucan again and took two over the course of a few days. then refilled the clindesse and used that. i feel a little better but still have this burning pain. i have been tested for all std's, i am married with two kids....i just don't understand. this is affecting so much of my life- from what i wear to the physical activity. any ideas? herbal remedies? anything?

"All the good cells when your on antibiotics that means "against life"..."

first don't take baths it doesn't help! it can actually make it worse, you kind of have to be your own doctor at times unfortunately, if i was you i would go back to the doctors and tell them you want them to do a pap and anything that will figure out what is going on, they wont do it unless you tell them! it costs them money to run tests like that so be persistent and don't leave without answers solid ones, ones that you understand also go to your local natural foods and find an acidopholis it will help bring back all the good cells when your on antibiotics that means "against life" ; that's why you get yeast. i think you all ready know that though. good luck and do your own research on line too you can find alot of good info for natural remedies but first figure out what it is. hope you feel better.don't forget you pay them to give you answers and keep you healthy don't give up!!!!

Q. There isn't much time left, my dog has paralysis in the rear end and no bowel movements at all in 2 days.?
please help me, my parents are ready to take him in to be euthanized in about an hour, but i'm not done fighting for him just yet. he has complete paralysis in the hind legs (spreading to the front) and cannot have any bowel movement, we've given him around 6 laxatives/stool softeners over the course of two days, yet he still won't go to the bathroom. all symptoms appeared in just two days, but has been increasingly getting worse. he has no bowel or bladder function, however he willingly drinks and eats, and is very alert to his surroundings. we do live near raccoons and they often try to get into our garbage which is why we think that it could possibly be coonhound paralysis. he pants often and does not seem to be in pain. through the help of our vet we've administered steroids and many antibiotics, iv fluids to keep him hydrated, and we've been feeding him yogurt and oatmeal to help him pass a bowel movement. i'm not willing to give up on him just yet, and he's been a dear friend to me for the 9 years of his life. also, his breed is a lab/chow mix and he's a medium size dog, if that helps in any way. please help me, my parents want to take him in to be euthanized either tonight or tomorrow morning. i'm desperate. update: as i said in my original post, he is not in pain. if it is coonhound paralysis, then there is a great rate of natural recovery once it has run its course. do not tell me i'm selfish or cowardly, i'm trying my best to find a cure for him before we make the decision to end his life. he isn't just laying down defeated, he's alert, tries to get up, is lovable. i've put many of my dogs to sleep when they were ready, and i don't think this dog is. he's still fighting, he isn't defeated in either his physical condition or his attitude. i would appreciate it if i could get some decent answers, not morons telling me i'm selfish. don't waste my time or your time by posting crap like that. i just want to make sure that there isn't some way to save him before deciding to end his life. i'm going through a very rough time right now, and would appreciate it if people would try not to be rude. thanks. at around 7:15 we put beloved beau to sleep....i think it was for the best. thank you all for your support and kindness.

"They want to give him a painless and dignified death..."

If they have chosen euthanization it's probably because there is nothing left they can do for him and he's just going to suffer. They want to give him a painless and dignified death. You should spend the time you have left with him to show him how much he means to you. But you shouldn't hold on to him when his quality of life is so low.
