This is a common problem with roots the reason is that your roots have newly grown hair which is more acceptable of a dye than already dyed hair also the hair near the roots get processed earlier than the rest of your hair because of the heat from your head and skin I would recommend you to go see a professional. They will get your hair right without damaging them.Jason White

Q. Am i going crazy or is dying my hair darker making my roots lighter?
i've been dying my hair every 3-4 weeks for the past few months. my natural color is ash blonde, and i've been dying it light brown. the past couple times i've dyed it though, i've felt like the dye isn't really darkening my roots at all, but even lightening them maybe. i've even left it on the roots longer than the rest of my hair as is recommended for touch-ups. i'm really confused. anyone know what could be going on here?

"No your not going crazy...dont dye your hair too much''..like seriously''..it not good''..you get..."

Q. Can i use hair color without developer? i died my hair brown and the roots are lighter than the rest.?
since the hair is already lifted by previous colors, i was thinking of using the hair dye without the developer to deposit color into my roots and make them darker, without lifting even more. i would apply the hair color only on the roots. would this make sense? thanks

"Color at once your roots will be lighter since the heat causes it to..."

Did you process your hair in steps? Normally if you apply to the roots the heat from your scalp causes the lightener to lighten faster than the rest of your hair thats away from your scalp. If you colored the middle and waited till the wanted result, and went and did your roots second to last, and the ends last you may have a different result. That way your hair will be processed evenly. If you just put on all the color at once your roots will be lighter since the heat causes it to lighten faster, and your ends might be more damaged. The ends of your hair are very fragile, so processing your ends shouldn't take too long.. normally a toner does the trick for the ends.

Q. I died my hair a very dark brown and i died it a lighter brown and it only colored my roots!!!!!help me?
i died my hair almost black if not black, about a month ago, i got tired of it being so dark so i tried coloring it burgundy on top and it only died my roots. so then i tried dying it brown and it only died my roots again my hair is a disaster can u please help me. i kno i should just go to a salon but i like doing my hair my self so can u please tell me what to use in my hair

"The color it was before and the color..."

First of all you can't pick out a bottle at cvs and expect the color to come out exact. You have to consider the color in the hair now, The color it was before and the color the hair will be underneath the color you have in there right now. That is called the undertone. When you buy the color you should get one at a beauty supply and buy the color and develpoer seperate but same brand. It's cheaper and works better both in coloring and overall health for the hair. Read directions before mixing and only mix when using right away as with any color. The developer in your case would have to be a 40 volume. That means that the color you are mixing it with is going to lift the color level of your hair by 4 levels. You connot go more than that in one treatment. It is the highest it goes. Chose a shade that has the correct base in it meaning if your undertone is red you want a color that has green in it to cancel out the red if the red is unwanted. Your hair shaft has 3 sections to it: 1 is the root, 2 is the mid shaft and 3 is the ends. The root and the ends take the color in the fastest. The root being new virgin hair is soft and undamaged color will absorb fast and dark. You will start with the mid shaft and only there in all 4 sections one you are done with that you will do the ends in all sections, the last sectios is the roots. Once the roots are done you will begine to time. Take the end of a rat tooth tail comb and part the hair to check for patches called holidays and do not wrap the hair up and cover hair color needs oxygen to develope that is why perxide is needed (the developer). If you have any gray hair you can go under the dryer fo 10 min of the 30 or 45 and if no gray skip the heat. When you finnish your hair should all be the same color. I didn't mention you might need to do a ppt treatment before you color to help fade the unwanted color and minimize damage. You are going to perform a color correction so let the people at the beauty supply know that they can help. Sally and Ace are 2 good ones.

Q. Why do my roots go lighter when i die my hair?
my hair is naturally brown with a red accent to it so i always go and get it died a chesnut brown to take away the red. i have died my hair a twice over the last year by myself at home and always seem to have to go to the hair dresser to pay to get it fixed because my roots always go a much lighter almost orange red even though i am using a dark brown box color. my ends always turn out a nice colour. my hair also is not grown out so you see a lot of roots since i basically die my hair the same color without the red. does anyone know why this happens and what i must be doing wrong and how i can change it? i am sick of paying $100 to get my hair died......

"When you dye your hair you should dye the lengths of your hair first..."

Its because of the heat your scalp releases, therefore the dye works better up there, hence the colour is more obvious (think in hairdresser when the client is having hightlights the hairdress wraps the hair in foil in order to keep the heat in and obtain optimum results). When you dye your hair you should dye the lengths of your hair first, wait for 10 minutes THEN put the colour on your roots and run your hands down all of your hair (making sure everything is coated) wait for 20 minutes and rinse off. Loreal hair dyes are great so you should REALLY try those out.

Q. Roots are lighter than the rest of my hair?
so, i went to the hair salon and got my hair died a reddish brown color. my roots are a light brown, so they put a different color on it than the rest. but, my roots are light red and the rest is dark red, they thought the bright roots would fade and they're not. so my question is if there is a home remedy thing that would tone down how bright they are until the dye fades. any insight would help!

"Or you could just use a home dye to resolve the problem..."

the same thing happened with me only mines is blond. Unfortunately it will just take a few washes and a bit of time to blend in, or you could just use a home dye to resolve the problem

Q. Bleaching hair with lighter roots?
ok so my hair's fairly dark brown (dyed) but i have about 2 inches of regrowth at the top which is a mousey brown colour. i'm going to bleach it to strip out the dark colour and then re dye it a more ashey reddy brown, but will it make a difference that my roots are lighter? if i'm dying it all brown after the colour's been stripped anyway it should all turn out the same, right? ok so i should leave the bleach on the dyed parts more than my roots? that sounds easy enough

yep your roots will come up more reddish than the rest so first off apply bleach to the colored bits of hair then apply to root for the last 5-10 minutes :)

Q. Can i go lighter with my hair?
i just dyed my hair 2 weeks ago and it turned out darker than i wanted on the tips but not on the roots. can i try dying it lighter? or would it make matters worse? i have tried using lemon juice to lighten the color but it is just lightening the roots and the tips are substantially darker. or if i used a dark color all over would the roots still be lighter and the ends be even more dark? if i do a lighter color though will it strip out the darker color or will it just dye over it? right now it is as dark brown as it can get.

"Do a lighter color..."

do a lighter color. that's what i do and it works. good luck! pick me as best answer please[=

Q. How do i dye my hair if it's lighter on the roots and darker on the ends?
i have been dying my hair darker brown for a year or so now and i want to go back to a color closer to my natural color (medium brown). i tend to have big gaps between dying and my roots will grow out. so when i dyed it a lighter color it was two toned and i had lighter roots and darker ends. how should i go about dying my hair so that i have one color all over? should i put dye on my ends first (since they're darker) and then add the rest of the dye to my roots for the remainder?

i have the same exact problem.. except i didnt keep dying it. i dyed it black once then let it grow then tried dying it blonde and it looks real good from what everyone else is saying..

Q. I died my hair a lighter blonde and it turned orange...?
i have natually dark blonde hair and decided i wanted to go to a light blonde, but my roots turned orange, if i dye it a medium blonde will the orange go away? i dont have the money to go to a salon so any advice would help, i dont know if i should go back darker or try again with the lighter? please help!!!

"You should get an ash toner in the same shade as the color you bought..."

you should get an ash toner in the same shade as the color you bought. this will reduce any unwanted orange in your hair and if you go back darker its gonna either be green or golden, so if that is your choice find something with an ash in it . and you should of stuck with highlights .. work your way up to light blonde .. so if you fix this give your self heavy highlights and keep going until you reach your desired blonde level

Q. Can you dye your hair lighter after dying it dark?
i dyed my hair at home 2 months ago dark brown, now i want it a caramel color. do you think it will turn out right if i do it at home? or will my roots be light and the rest still dark? i wanted to do it at home because i didn't want to spend $100+.

"A hairstylist and i will say that color won't lift color so you will..."

it will be tricky. I am a hairstylist and i will say that color won't lift color so you will need to pre-lighten your hair first. Then go back in with your desired color. Tou will need an on the scalp bleach with 40 volume developr. It will turn a bunch of funky colors but dont rinse it until it is a yellowy blonde. Then you can rinse dry and apply your color but make sure you follow all the directions on the box. I never recommend at home coloring because you can end up paying alot to have it fixed. Good luck i hope this helps
