Q. Help! light blonde hair turns grey when toner or dye is added to touch up roots? i have been bleaching my own hair to a pale yellow. but when i go in for a root touch up, the salon either uses a dye or toner to lift my dark blonde roots to pale yellow. this dye or toner usually has a blue, purple, or darker base. since my hair is so light blonde and porous, it absorbs the pigment from the dye or toner such as blue and it turns my yellow blonde hair grey which angers me because i hate ash/grey. are there any toners and dyes that have a yellow base so i don't have to worry about my blonde hair turning ash/grey anymore? or am i just going to have to stick to regular bleach for root touch ups and don't do any toning at all to avoid this from happening? my blonde hair has even pulled grey at high end aveda salons when a toner or dye is added. i hate ash with a passion. i want my hair to look yellow blonde not greyish blonde.
i don't have grey hair yet. my natural hair color is a level 8 blonde and i bleach it to platinum. once my hair is platinum (a level 10) it is the dye or toner added to it that turns it grey.
"Not high lift color or toner..."
let them know all you want is a bleach touch up on the roots, not high lift color or toner. tell them you like your hair a soft yellow color and problem solved. if you like as well you can ask them to mix a clear toner with a little bit of a vanilla color in it to fill the hair after the bleaching process.
Q. Hair turned grey/purple/silver when i dyed it blonde!!? i used garnier nutrisse extra light ash blonde hair dye. i know i'm an idiot and i shouldn't have done it at home, but i did and i need your help to fix it. i probably will go to a salon to fix it, hopefully they can help.
my hair is naturaly a very dark ash blonde...really dark. (for blonde) when i was little i was towhead but it just kept getting darker. well i decided to dye it a really dark red (looked awesome =d) i did that for about 9 months then i got bored with it and wanted to go to a really light blonde color (not quit platnium but really light towhead) so i first wanted to get all the red i could out of it and i used color oops (yes i know...stupid) lolz i didn't know it was only for right after you colored it. anyways it turned a copper color (ugh) i went to a salon and told them what i wanted, they said bleach all over my head wold ruin it so i should just do highlights of bleach to help get the red out. well that made it a light copper color :( i waited all summer then i went to sallys and used quick blue bleach. that worked well, my roots had grown out and now it was stark white where the roots were, the ends were a yellow color (ugh) i used toner (towhead)...turned it grey but faded over a couple weeks. so then on i wanted to let my hair rest. i spoiled my hair with a hole bunch of conditioners and crap. it became healthy again=d but my hair had grown out like an inch and a half and the blonde was now bananna yellow again and some of it still orange in places (im okay with that ;) so its been four months since i bleach/toned it and i wanted to do my roots and tone down the yellow. i wanted something that wouldn't completly ruin the condition of my hair so i asked around and they said garnier was the heathiest. so i looked up online what the lightest shade was and it was extra light ash blonde (white choclate). okay i died it.....it turned gray were the yellow was...and copper on my roots. i don't mind the copper i'll just dye it again with the same dye and then hopefully it will be the right color. my only problem is the grey...i know it'll fade...but to be honest i don't want to wait. is there anything that will help fade the gray? anything besides stripping the color or dyeing it a darker blonde (i don't want it darker) like anything natrual? you know, food. thank you for listening, it was really long(sorry).
that dye that i used didn't dry my hair at all, it actually conditioned it. i'm big on hair treatments and deep conditioners and other crap. my hair is spoiled. lolz but then again it kinda has to be with all the crap it puts up with. oh and all these things i did to my hair were very long in between. i didn't just go here than there than do this and that. i let my hair take long breaks ;)
yes i know i should go in to get it fixed and i probably will but i just wanted to know if i could do anything to help move the fading process along. just so its not so gray anymore. like anything natrual? but i understand going in would be best.

I feel like it'll fade out naturally over time. I would normally tell you to try bleaching it again, but at this point you've just done so much to it. I bet it probably feels like bubblegum when it's wet, right? That stretchiness when it's wet is going to make your hair get weaker and weaker and start breaking all over the place, which is just as bad as having it fall out. What you're gonna need to do is to cut off as much as you are willing to part with, and start conditioning the hell out of it. Don't shampoo it more than a couple times a week, but still shower and use conditioner in your hair anyway.
Q. Blonde hair turning grey/purple when trying to dye it darker ash blonde? my sister has dyed and bleached her hair a lot, but she's kept it an extremely light blonde for a while. she's most recently dyed it with loreal "super blonde" lightening kit. now, she wants to dye it a darker blonde, closer to her natural colour. first, she tried loreal "dream blonde" in dark ash brown, but it turned a cool greyish colour, with purplish tones to it. she used "color oops" hair colour remover to fix this, then tried again with clairol perfect 10 in medium blonde, but it still turned the same grey/purple colour, so she's using color oops again. why is this happening, and is there a certain type of hair colour she can use to acheive a dark blonde without this grey/purple tone? does she absolutely need to go to a salon, and if she does will they be able to do it? thanks so much.

She needs use a light brown with no ash colour in it (it's what's giving her the weird tones ). Since her hair is so light, then the colour she puts in it will be a lighter result than what is on the box, so she should go for a colour that is a bit darker than the result she wants.

L'oreal extra light ash blonde on bleached blonde hair? hi, my hair is bleached blonde and it's kind of yellow, it's not light enough to be washing with shimmer lights so the other day i bought l'oreal extra light ash blonde hair dye to put over it.. now i've been reading that ash blonde dye turns your hair tinted grey? i definitely do not want grey hair.. does anyone have any experience with this dye over bleached blonde hair? please share, if not i'm going to return it and get another dye i guess...

Dyed natural blond hair lite ash brown; turned out bluish grey. can i dye back to blond w/o damage/orangeness? i dyed my naturally light blonde hair a color called "light ash brown" 5 days ago. it turned out a blueish-grey color and looks horrible. i want to know if i can dye it blonde right away again, or if this will cause too much damage or an orange color, both of which i do not want. if i can't, what should i do to make it a nice brown color? and if i can return to blonde, can i go a really light bleach blonde or should i do a darker blonde?

Well you can get your natural color back but its going to take some work. First of all it turned blueish gray because your hair grabbed the base color in the product you used . You probably did not leave it on long enough.
To get your hair back to its natural shade go to Sally Beauty Supply and choose a color that is closest to your natural with a NEUTRAL base. You are also going to need a product called Instant Whip and 40 volume developer.
Use 2 oz of color, 2 oz of developer and 1/2 oz of Instant Whip. Apply the mixture to your hair and wait 40 minutes. Your natural color will be back.
Wait 1 week and yes you can highlight. Just make sure you invest in a good conditioner. All this coloring can dry out your hair.
