Q. Home schooling a high school age child?
i have a 16 year old son in high school. he is absolutely brilliant and beyond intelligent. he is terribly bored with school, hates it, etc. he does make good grades, but has lost his interest in doing well for the sake of his future (i think this is kind of a hard thing for alot of kids to really get anyway), and his passion for learning. he used to be such an amazingly curious and explorative learner. public school may have subjects he ought to learn, is not teaching him anything but how to memorize enough to pass a test and make the teacher look good. i am seriously considering pulling him out of school and home schooling. our local community college offers classes for free for high schoolers, and also provides free sat, act, and other placement tests. at this point, he could easily test out of high school anyway, but sadly this isn't an option in a public school system. the community college can teach any classes for which i'm far from qualified and also some he would be interested in but can't take at school. i'd love to hear from anyone who pulled a kid out of high school and home schooled, for any reason. how did it go? where did you start in the process? where did you get information? where can i find general resources about just beginning, laws, etc.? how did your child's school react when you un-enrolled him or her? any information or experience would be helpful. my son is absolutely all for the idea. he does not like very many of his "peers" due to their obsessive interest in making out, "just chillin", gossiping, unintelligent babbling (his words, not mine), and fascination with how they look as opposed to any more substantial kind of thing. i'm paraphrasing, here, his own words. he truly likes the idea of having classes with adults and being, to some degree, his own boss. even the subjects i would "teach" would actually be things i assign and he would be responsible for being pro-active with.

"It because they do get money per child and have a hard time accepting..."

I home-school my daughters (2 in high school and 1 in middle school). It works great for us. I pulled my oldest out for the same reasons you are describing but she was in middle school. My younger two were pulled out because of disagreements with the school about what was best for them and if I really should have pulled my oldest even though she was not attending that school when I pulled her. Schools don't like it because they do get money per child and have a hard time accepting that there might be another way without them (they like to feel needed but failed my girls' education needs). The school didn't like it but it is a legal right of the parents in every state to be able to homeschool. We have lived in a couple of states while homeschooling (husband is military) and the laws are different from state to state. Some states are very friendly others make it a little harder and add paperwork. My oldest was taking college courses as a sophmore but we don't have a financially viable option where we are now. She loved her college courses and learned a lot. She took them for credit we used them as Honors courses and she can transfer the credits when she goes to college. There are a lot of universities that accept home schooled students, so don't let anyone tell you otherwise (people will). We started by looking at the graduation requirements for the state we are in and worked her through the course needed. She takes all her state tests (currently the state requires it some don't) at the high school including PSAT, ACT, SAT and Regents (our state has them). If she takes college courses, I make sure they will be transferable to a university and they can meet the requirements of the state as well. It takes a lot of pro-active work on my girls' part but they do fine. I also assign work they do and keep up on records. Always keep up on the records (grades, courses being taken, hours if your state requires you too). And when dealing with the school district always, always make sure to keep a record of phone calls and who you talked to and mail eveything they require return post so you can prove they got it. I have never had a problem with it but I have heard some districts have claimed never to have received the paperwork. For the laws of your state try: http://www.nhen.org/LegInfo/state_list.asp There are virtual public schools that do high school as well, K12 and conections academy and these are free. We tried both loved k12 didn't like connections academy much but it was workable for 1 school year, I know others that loved connections academy. So that might also be an option if they are available in your area. Hope this helps.

Q. Why do i have to pass my driving theory test?
it is severely fucking me off. i have been revising for ages and ages, just about there with hazard perception (clicking the computer screen and scoring points on potential hazards), but i am hating the mock tests for theory. why cant the pass mark be lower? driving instructor says am not a bad driver, so why do we have to sit there at a computer and answer boring questions on driving? eg why do i need to know how fast a mobility buggy goes or what child seat restraint to use. waste of time, seeing as i have my human biology to concerntrate on. why were these irritating tests brought in? and why cant the test mark be lower? i've been getting 77% in the mocks. i actually feel like thumping my boyfriend when he boasts smugly that when he sat his test in the early 90s all he had to do was look at a few signs and get them right, none of this stupid computer rubbish. am getting so wound up with it, help please! tests on thursday i hear you snozboz, but why should the dsa make us wound up to the point of where we stress, all cos of some idiots who cant drive a car? er greco, my priorities are right thanks very much. fyi i have actually been studying for this more than my human biology. cheers mick, and thanks for the additional info snoz, helps to know someone has been in the situation!

It's just to make sure you're confident on reading your road signs and traffic awareness. It's really a piece of pi$$,a typical example would be You are driving along a country lane and you are approaching horse riders,do you (a) Rev your engine and beep your horn (b)Get out your machine gun and see how many you can get in 30 seconds or (c) Slow down and prepare to stop. I know this is an exsaggeration, but it really is so stupid questions. You don't seem a dumb person, you'll pass it with flying colours.

Q. Would you pick a toyota camry or a chevy impala?
if you were in the market for a new car (or used 2009 model) which one of these would you pick? we have two children who are tall for their age, and leg room is what we are wanting but we like both of these cars and have sat in/tested out both of them. which would you pick? or option #3; we could keep driving our 2004 focus that currently has 77,000 miles on it and will be paid off in 6 months.

Toyota Camry because it will last longer and hold it's value

Q. 5 weeks bleeding no cramps and test still positive?
hello everyone! here is a bit of history for you, i have had 4 pregnancies in the last 14mths. this is number 5 the last 4 have ended in m/c before week 5. i have two healthy children ages 11 and 8. i am 36 and dh is 35. i found out i was pregnant very early this time. around 3 weeks. my doctor put me on progesterone suppositories twice a day and on baby aspirin once a day. all was going fine, i felt good and was doing great. finally got a good line(had been getting super faint ones) on a home test on thursday and a pos on a digital on thursday as well. on saturday i woke up to some bleeding, bright red when i wiped. nothing on my panties. anyway, by sat afternoon it was enough to get to a pad. i haven't filled one pad in a 24 hour period yet. i think it is progesterone that is coming out mixed with blood. anyway, no cramping just some gas (tmi). anyway, i took another line test today sunday it was darker than yesterdays not even fmu, so figured ok the digitals are alot less sensitive so i took one of those ept certainty it was "pregnant" i was very surpised as with all of my other m/c's they had all gone negative or super light lines by the time i was bleeding.anyway, thought ok let me give it a bit, so i have been doing stuff to keep my mind off of it (mostly homework but went to the store) and about 9 hours later i peed again, still a super strong line on the test and a "pregnant" on the ept. so does that mean my levels are still rising and there is a chance everything is ok? i can't tell if my symptoms are symptoms because i am on progesterone. i do have another beta scheduled for tomorrow morning but was just wondering if anyone had any thoughts. no clots or anything just red mixed with the progesterone. we really want this to be ok, and dh says he still thinks it is. i live in italy so going to the er is out unless i go to the one on the base and they already think i am nuts with the other times i went in there at 4 weeks bleeding. please give me your thoughts! thanks so much. i am just baffled by the test still getting stronger and the digital still showing positive. thanks ladies or gents! jenny ok, so this morning i took another digital ept, still "pregnant" i also waited until my 2nd morning urine, did a line test, the same type i have been taking it was still stronger today. no cramps still, no clots, and it appears to be getting lighter so i am hoping that it was just something like irritation from the progesterone suppositories combined with the thinning of the blood from the baby aspirin. i took my beta this morning but won't have the results back until the doc can find time to call me later today. so until then i am trying to keep positive and busy with the kids. thanks to the ladies who replied and who are replying now. :)

go to the er you are not nuts and hope all is well

Q. Home school/alternative education - where do adults start?
hi. my husband and i are interested in delivering an alternative education to our future children and would like to try homeschooling them. we would like to do "group" homeschooling with other like minded parents 1-3 times each week is this possible? do we have to follow a specific curriculum or just make sure that the end results (grades) of each school semester/year are satisfactory and, how are kids independantly graded/marked - i mean, what is stopping parents from giving their kids all a's? what do you think about this- start training kids on how to answer sat type questions at a very young age (grade 4?) so by the time they need to take the test they are masters? do parents get tutors for homeschooled kids or do all of the work themselves? thanks

"And starting your children out at an early age on sat type questions is good..."

There are many homeschool groups that are out there to offer support, and several of them do have "group" classes. I guess the best way for you to get started is to look at the state laws regarding homeschooling. Each state differs in its requirements, but you should be able to obtain access to the laws pretty quickly. Try internet searching your state and homeschool law, and you should find a site very quickly detailing the requirements. Generally, you have to be evaluated by an independent teacher each year in most states and report to the school district in order to make sure your child's grades are up to snuff. There isn't a specific curriculum you have to follow, but there are many out there. From what you have said, a curriculum such as A Beka may be a good match for you, as they are generally pretty tough and will turn your child into a well rounded individual. You can get tutors for your children, but a large majority of individuals do most of the work themselves. That is a matter of personal preference. And starting your children out at an early age on SAT type questions is good. You can never be too prepared, and it does help. Good luck in your endeavors!

Q. Reward system ideas for stubborn child?
i have an eight year old son, soon to be nine who has been having some behavioral issues. he is quite immature for his age and seems to constantly be getting in trouble at home. he constantly fights with his younger sister, is very impulsive. my husband and i have both been a team in our discipline actions and have sat our son down and talked with him about his behavior and how some things need to change. we have tried all sorts of things such as taking things away from him (examples...toys, having friends come over, grounding, no tv, swimming, going somewhere special, etc..) but it only seems to work for about a week and then he resorts back to being very stubborn. we have tried several different reward systems for his good behavior. he wanted a wii so we told him he would have to earn it by behaving, so my husband and i made a chart with chores he needed to do each day, and also listed the rules of the house and what was expected of him. we also put report card grades and tests scores on the chart as well. at the end of the week we added up all the points and gave him money to save for the wii. well now he decided he doesn't care anymore so he's back to being impulsive and stubborn. is there any parents that have other "reward system" ideas or advice on how to handle an out of control child?

"And give your child a reason to be good and..."

I think its good you want to do a reward system.. good for you. I think a lot parents only punish the bad, and do not reward the good. Some parents only reward the good and do not punish the bad. I would make a chart for positive consequences and negative consequences. Some of my rewards for good behavior.. is trips to video store, trips to the play place, small allowance for the oldest one, among other things. I also have consequences for broken rules posted so there is no questions. For example: Back talking = timeout and or loss of privilege, not doing chores = extra chores with no reward, lying and outright disrespect = automatic spanking. Have a chart for good and bad behavior, and give your child a reason to be good and a reason not to be bad. Good luck

Q. Should old people have to re take their driving tests ????
i was watching a tv documentry about an ambulance crew in liverpool, uk and they were going on a red call to very ill child who had stoped breathing. well on the way they had to go down a narrow street with parked cars either side so the road was a narrow one lane road. while they went down there on blues and sirrons a blue metro just stoped in the middle of the narrow street and just sat there for ages. inside the car were two oap's wife and couple who thought the ambulance was a polie car pulling them over so they just stoped and waited. after a few mins the paramedics got out and told them to move!!! do you think old people should have to re-take thier driving test ??? i do!!!

"Except the age..."

Do you think young people should have to retake their driving tests? I was at a corner in traffic once, the light turned green, and nobody moved because an ambulance was entering the intersection, lights blazing, sirens blaring. The guy in the truck next to me, looked about 20, was honking his horn, flashing his lights, and yelling out his window for people to start moving, the light was green! Do you see a difference in your story and mine? I don't, except the age, so I repeat my question. Do you think young people should have to retake their driving tests?

Q. I have a friend who is around the age of 17, and has had difficulty with reading. it coud be dyslexia? help?
he is generally an intelligent person, but just had a speech impediment as a child. therefore he was help back by the school system and never really taught anything the right way because they put kids like him behind. now, years and years later, this problem is really interefering with his self esteem and his reading comprehension or spelling. it is hard to pass any tests and pretty soon he is going to face the sat. as a best friend i really want to help but i don't know how. it is so difficult for him to accept the help and to get past feeling stupid in order to really understand whatever i could try to teach him. any helpful hints or resources would be greatly appreciated =/

"Had a speech delay as a young child..."

If it is dyslexia, then he would be eligible for accommodations on the SAT, but it has to be a documented disability to get them. I know it is hard for him, he probably has been made to feel stupid his entire educational career but you can try and explain it to him this way - being dyslexic and using accommodations provided on tests is no more than a person needing glasses to read an exam. Each person is unique, and he needs help of some sort to understand the questions, just as someone who needs glasses could not take a test without them. A good place to start is at his school. He should talk to his guidance counselor about being tested. It is very expensive to test outside of school, so he should take advantage of this opportunity now - if he is in public school, it will cost him nothing. Tell him my son is similar - he had a speech delay as a young child , has a learning disability, but with accommodations, he is in his second year of college and doing well! Good luck, he is lucky to have a good friend like you!
