Matters on the hair color you have- if you have dark hair and want to go blonde- to real light blonde you would use a Vom 40-50 and if you want to just dye your hair you would use Vom 10 and sometimes 20 now if your hair is med- and want to go dark you would use 20 though... I have dyed my hair light blonde and white a lot so this is something that I would know. You want to always make sure though you do use the right number of VOM though. If you go to Sallly`s hair place to buy the VOM- you can always ask them to help you out and they will tell you which number of VOM you would want to be using. The same thing happened to me! I used two boxes as usual since my hair is so long and it was supposed to go dark brown. My roots were blonde (my natural color) and the rest a med dark shade of brown. I did my roots first so it could sit a little longer and be the same color as the rest of my hair, I rinsed that out, dryed my hair and did the rest of my head I noticed right away the two boxes (which supposed to be the same color) rinced out completely different colors one prupleish and the other brown. When my hair dried there is no doubt that it is jet black, there is not even a hint of brown just pure black even my roots which were light blonde. So I am pretty sure that they messed up and put the wrong color in the box and now I have no idea how to get this out of my hair :oP I tried calling three different numbers and theres no anser at an of them and the best I got was a machine telling me if I send in my receipt they would send me $6 to buy one new box of dye

Yes, you can use volume 30 or volume 40 hair color developers in order to lighten the color of your hair . Volume 40 is a bit too strong , hence use it with care .

 

I once used H and S to strip colour off my hair when I died it too dark by accident. I did take some of the colour off without hurting my hair. The lady at the drugstore recommended it to me.

If you are using paul mitchell hair color to darken your hair , in that case you can use volume 20 number creme developer for the purpose . volume 30 and volume 40 developers are too harsh at times on hair .

If you have black hair and you want to go to a color that is level 5 , you may need to use a bleach, to lift the pigment from the black hair. 40 volume peroxide will add the pigment (the color you`ve selected) to the hair "faster". When coloring black hair without lifting the color (bleaching) you shoud only go 4 shades lighter. The volume of the peroxide depends on the hairs` porosity.
